Happy Birthday to the Halloween Litters! Plus more show updates...

This past week brought 1st Birthday Celebrations for the Halloween Litters 1 & 2 (August 31st and September 1st, respectively).

Birthday pics and updates are rolling in already and we wanted to share.  It's always so fun to see pups as they grow:

First up, we've got Aspen (HT Becky Driscoll) - enjoying some doggie 'birthday cake' and looking pretty happy about it!

Next up, we've got Bedelia (HT Aunt Bedelia) enjoying her big chair and her birthday bunny...which is apparently very bouncy, which she loves:

Next up, we've got Eva (HT Little Rock)...being as cute as a bug...and apparently getting into everything.   I don't know what it is about whippets and succulents, but they do seem to have a weakness for them!

And now...for some awesome Show Results.  This past weekend at the Cheyenne Kennel Club show in Wyoming, Max (HT Max Zorin), from our Bond Litter, went Best of Winners for a 3 pt. major!  Giant congratulations to Max and Beth; both looked great and did a wonderful job:

Also at the show, Upson (pictured above in his birthday hat) took 1st place in the Owner-handled class both days - Congrats to owner-handler, Heather!

Chewy went Reserve-Winners-Dog on Saturday and first in the Bred-by-Handler dog class on Sunday; we're still fishing for that last point to finish his AKC Championship.

Dots went 1st in the Bred-by-Handler bitch class both days.

We also got to see a BUNCH of Horsetooth pups running at the Fun Run at the Zoiboys Ranch last weekend.  Great to see Breezy (HT Twizzler), Gatsby (HT Carol Anne), Max (HT Max Zorin), Upson (HT Upson Pratt), Omar (HT Oh Henry), Kima (HT Skittles), plus our own Polliwog, Feynman, Johnson, Alfredo, Trinity, Dots, and 1 year birthday-baby Theo.

Next Fun Run is scheduled for October 2nd...we'd love to see you all there.  Holler if you want more details.  These practice runs are a great, relaxed and fun way to get your pups some experience on the lure for coursing or racing, plus to hang out with a bunch of great sighthounds and their people.  :)

Late Summer 2016 - Show, Racing & Puppy Updates

It's been a really good summer - both in the show ring and at the races - for us at Horsetooth Whippets.  Here's a quick recap of late June through August:

RACE RESULTS:

06/26/16 - NAWRA (Straight Track), in Peyton, CO - Bok Choy placed 1st, and Lychee placed 3rd and Best-Opposite-Sex.  This is our first time taking a first place at either straight or oval track!

07/24/16 - NOTRA (Oval Track), in Petyon, CO - Feynman placed 3rd, Bok Choy was 4th, Lychee was 5th, and Penelope was 6th place (at 9.5 years old!).

08/14/16 - NOTRA in Peyton, CO - In a field of 15, with lots of race-bred dogs, Lychee placed 5th; Bok Choy placed 6th, and Penelope placed 9th - our old gal was still in the top 10!

SHOW RESULTS:

This past week at the Rocky Mountain Hound Association Specialty show and the Greeley Kennel Club Show, both in Greeley Colorado, Chewy picked up another point toward his AKC Championship on Thursday; going Winners Dog.

Dots took Reserve Winner's Bitch on Friday at the Hound Specialty, and took second from the Bred-by class to the Winner's Bitch on Sunday.

Buzz disagrees.  He knows there's nothing better in the world than eating your very own giant stick.  The bigger, the better.  Log size is the best!

May & June 2016 - Birthdays, Show & Race Results

Whew!  We've gotten a bunch more birthday pics of past pups, and also some show results and race results to add to this big update:

Show News:

It's been a really busy spring so far for Horsetooth Whippets.  Chewy has continued to excel in the showring, picking up 2 more points toward his AKC Championship in Wyoming on Memorial Day weekend, and in Longmont the following weekend.  He's now only got 2 points to go before he hits the required 15 points, including both of his majors.

Racing/Running News*

5 of the Horsetooth crew went down to Peyton this past weekend with Jen for some Oval Track racing, sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Borzoi Club.  While there were not enough entries to make it an official race for whippets, we did have an 11-dog field and the HT dogs did pretty well:

Bok Choy came in second place for the day, picking up another 9 points toward his OTR title.  His 1/2 brother, Feynman came in 4th for the day; and full sister Lychee came in 5th.   Spicy Duck ran her heart out, but had to be scratched after her second race due to a badly torn pad.  

And 9 year old Matriarch Penelope proved she's still got it - hanging in there for all 3 of her races - that's 1146 yards run for the day for them all!

*Check out the list of fun runs, solo sprint trials, and racing schedule at the bottom of this post, if you're interested in doing some running/training with your whips.  They all love to do it!

Racing:

NAWRA (straight track - 200 yards) is June 25-26

You'll want to mostly look at Fun Runs to start, but coming out to ANY event is good (we often have time to train pups after events are over, or in between), and we ALWAYS need extra hands around.  Coming out to any and all events is great, as you really get a feel for the people and everything...

ZASSC = Zoiboyz Annual Solo Speed Challenge - single (solo), timed sprints w/ prizes at the end of the year.  Once a dog is hot on the lure, these are GREAT for continued conditioning and getting them to stick to the lure (so they don't course the other dogs instead of the lure and get disqualified in coursing and racing).  Stats and more info are here:  http://zassc.org/

Fun Run = open to all breeds, training & conditioning runs for all.
