The 'Let's talk about Food!' Post

This is a repost of some of the ins & outs of raw feeding - what it entails, and why we do it with all of our dogs, ages 5 weeks to 13 years old...

So - let's talk about FOOD!

As some of you may already know, we switched our entire pack to a raw, natural diet just over 6 years ago - and they are thriving.

Our decision was based on lots of research, and also the knowledge that many of our pack are aging and we wanted to extend their lives as long as we can.  After all, who wouldn't want their whippet to be as healthy and long-lived as possible?

Our matriarch, Penelope (great-grandma to both of our current litters of pups), was 9.5 years old when we switched - she passed away peacefully at Thanksgiving of 2022 at over 15.5 years old!

The Oo pups are the 8th litter we've fed 100% raw (both parents eat an all raw, biologically appropriate diet, and the pups are weaning directly to raw).

This means we've got some reading/homework for our potential puppy homes.  This updated page on the website is just the tip of the iceberg, but it gives some of the reasons we switched to raw, and hopefully encourages you to investigate this option:  https://horsetoothwhippets.com/raw-diet-info.html

Jen currently does all of our pack's meal prep and raw diet on a 'do-it-yourself' plan - but this is a LOT of work (much harder than pouring some dry kibble into a bowl), and it takes a lot of understanding of canine nutrition - not something we expect our puppy owners to have to work so hard at!

Because of this, we've helped lots of our puppy owners make the switch to raw with premade diets (some of these are ridiculously expensive...so we've done a lot of homework and found quality companies that supply great raw food affordably) - already balanced, and premade, so you don't have to work at it.

The most important thing to know right now about raw feeding is that a dog's natural ph balance in their gut is perfect for raw foods - but kibble takes a different ph level to digest, making them work harder to get nutrition and taxing them over the years they eat it.

All of the Oo pups will be eating a biologically natural diet when they go to their new homes - so if you do choose to change them to kibble (Jen now calls these 'death nuggets' after all her scary research into the dog food industry), just know that you will need to go very slowly and results might not be optimal - in both the short, and long term.

Those of you who know us well know we're utterly passionate about our whippets, and we've become passionate about feeding them right, too!

The info. on this post and on the website is really just the tip of the iceberg - so don't be afraid to ask questions about feeding raw, it really is Jen's passion - even after 6+ years!

Raw Feeding RESOURCES:

Where to Buy Raw Food:

There are several different options for buying raw directly in Colorado - including co-ops, pick-ups, and deliveries.

1. Raw Dog Food & Co (RDFC):  https://rawdogfoodandco.com/  Almost everyone I know who feeds raw in CO uses Raw Dog Food & Company (this is the company I buy from to feed our puppies).

You can pick up at their warehouse, have delivery to your house (for a fee), or use their drop-off locations and schedule to pick up on their refrigerated truck.

They have a really convenient 'Puppy Power Box' that has a variety of protein blends - balanced especially for growing pups.  I recommend this for all first-time raw feeders, as I know that anything else can get overwhelming, trying to figure out how and what to feed.  RDFC makes it easy!  Cost is around $4/lb for the puppy box.  The foods are preground, and come in rolls or 'chubs' - just like how you buy ground beef at the grocery store, but with bone included along with organs, etc.

2. Raw Four Paws:  http://rawfourpaws.com/index.html  This one is new to me, but they're local to Denver, and they deliver, and they carry well-known, reputable premade raw foods!  Looks like they run around $3 to $6/lb

3.  My Pet Carnivore:  https://www.mypetcarnivore.com/  While not a Colorado company, this company does ship nationwide.  I've purchased from them several times and have been really happy with them.  They do have grinds and blends, but nothing specific to puppies...so would be a resource for older dogs, or you'd need to supplement a bit of extra bone (chicken wings, necks, or feet) with their grinds.  They DO have some really wild things (beaver tails, muskrat, other weird proteins) that would be helpful for dogs with allergies/special needs, etc.

3.  Simply Rawsome:  https://simplyrawsomeus.com/  Another non-local company, but they DO ship nationwide and run about $3.50 to $5.50/lb.  They have some good discounts, and have premade, balanced grinds - again, they'd need extra bone for pups, but the price is nice!

 4.  Darwin's:  https://www.darwinspet.com/dog-food/ Darwin's is a larger company than those listed above.  They have several different formulas, and I do know of quite a few people who feed Darwin's - cost is a little higher on their recipes than RDFC listed above - closer to $6 to $7/lb.

5.  Air Dried Raw: For those who want the health benefits of raw, but the convenience of kibble - air dried raw is a complete, balanced diet that has been air dried and can be fed like kibble.

There are 2 companies we like:  Sundays for Dogs:  https://sundaysfordogs.com/    This food was developed by a veterinarian, and is a small, start up company.  Currently, they only have a beef formula (I've ordered some of this to try with the puppies!), but will be adding a chicken recipe soon.  The thing I like best about this food is that unlike other air-, freeze-, or dehydrated raw diets, there are no synthetics (synthetic vitamins) and no anti-foods (peas, lentils, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc.) that can actually rob your dog of the benefits of raw, not to mention contributing to the possibility of diet-related DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy - a deadly nutritional deficiency associated with grain-free kibbles and anti-foods).  They have a nifty little 'comparison' feature on the website where you can compare your current food to Sundays, as well.  Thanks goes out to my friend Robyn for recommending I check them out.

In the same category, but at a much lower price point, we also really like The Real Meat Company:   https://www.realmeatpet.com/  We often add this to our regular raw as a 'topper', and also use it for treats.  (Our cats love it, too!)

6.  Facebook has a Denver Raw Feeding Co-op:   https://www.facebook.com/groups/1938235239603676

7.  DIY (Do It Yourself):  For those who interested in a DIY raw diet (again, while we wouldn't necessarily recommend trying to balance a raw diet for puppies, once they are adults, we can help guide those interested in DIY)...this is the most economical method of feeding raw, especially if you have freezer space and can buy in bulk.  By example, when we were feeding kibble to our pack, Jen was spending around $700/month in dog food.  Now that we do it all ourselves on raw, and buy in bulk, we spend around $300 to $500/month.  That's a big difference!!!

Raw Feeding Information & Resources:

Jen's all-time go-to resource for Raw Feeding is the book, Give Your Dog a Bone, by Dr. Ian Billinghurst, an Australian veterinarian who pioneered raw feeding when he saw the damage that feeding kibble was doing to his patients.  This book explains why raw food is so much healthier than kibble and just how easy it can be to feed it!

Raw and Natural Nutrition for Dogs, by Lou Olson, Phd, is another fantastic book (with great, easy to follow recipes).  Lou has been feeding raw and breeding and raising Rottweilers for 40+ years.

Another great book (and in print, and a quick, easy read) from yet another vet from down under is Dr. Clare Middle's book, Real Food for Dogs and Cats.

And, last but not least, 2 of our all-time favorite sites with great FAQ's and articles on feeding raw:

The Raw Feeding Community

There you have it!  This is a lot of info. to consume (no pun intended), so take your time, and as always - don't be afraid to ask questions!

Whippet Size/Weight Study

Size stats are in on 109 of the puppies we've produced over the last 15+ years.

For those who didn't know, I've been collecting current weight, height, diet, and overall body condition on all of the pups we've bred for about a month now.

We've said many times throughout the years that birth weight and size don't mean anything in relation to adult size.

However, because of how big the current Oo litter pups are, I wanted to do a little study to see if that is really accurate.

I went through and looked at the largest & smallest pups (at birth) in each litter and compared to largest and smallest in each litter at their current ages.

I also looked at the pups' weights at 5 weeks old, which is the age we usually stop doing daily weigh-ins, and looked at largest & smallest compared to current adult weights.

It was also really fun to look at overall male vs. female average weights, as well as highs, lows, and median & mode weights across all of these pups & litters.

Across 22 litters and 109 dogs, here's what we found:

The biggest pup in any given litter is the biggest adult only 18% of the time.

The biggest pup at 5 weeks is the biggest adult 36% of the time.

The smallest pup at birth is the smallest adult only 14% of the time.

The smallest pup at 5 weeks is the smallest adult 41% of the time.

Here's the chart of male/female averages and other fun numbers, too:

In looking through all the data, the one thing that's not detected in the numbers, but became evident very quickly to me was how much genetics really do play into things...we have lines that consistently produced bigger dogs, and those that consistently produced smaller ones...and of course, a few that were a complete 'mixed bag' with both small and large adults!

For those out there really interested, here's a break down of averages by litter:

"Everybody out of the pool!"

Another big day for the Oo pups - no more whelping pools!  They gained their freedom to romp around in the whelping pen and made the adjustment with no problems.

They already have discovered the joy of sleeping in their cave (kennel), which makes for early crate training, and are hopping in and out of the litter boxes with ease, as well.

This group has been one of our cleanest litters ever, thanks to the help of super-mom, Dots...but it also seems they themselves are just a naturally clean group - which makes our lives easier, for sure.  😊

I couldn't resist taking a pic of the pristine whelping pen just before cutting them loose in it - it'll never be that clean and organized again, haha!

Also caught some video of their first few minutes with new-found freedom.  It won't be long before they're ready to be cut loose in our living room and into the big open spaces of the training rooms at the training facility.

First up, a few pics from their last day or two in the pool:

Osgood Magoo - perfecting the 'roach' sleeping position.

Betty Boop, Oodles, the fox toy, Toodle-oo, Doodle (roaching!) and Loocey Loo.

Oodles says, "Oh, HAI!"

The rare and elusive Doodle Roach.

Meanwhile...Osgood also stilllll roaching.

Later - Osgood showing off his pink bubble gum toe beans.

The whelping kennel - just before introducing the pups.

These guys are so big, they already fill up a medium kennel, and here we have Oodles and Loocey Loo spilling right out of it!  I might actually have to add another one to the set up.

And some video of the pups' first time in the pen:

Oo pups - 3.5 weeks

A little cold weather isn't slowing down the Oo's...they've been happily playing, eating, and snoozing under their heat lamp...they have no idea it's going to get much colder before it gets better!

They're already getting their sharp little puppy teeth poking through, still enjoying their solid food (along with Dots' plentiful milkbar), and living the good life in general.

Just waking up...

Toodle-oo says, "Do I smell food?"

Doodle & Betty Boop (back)...still too sleepy to come investigate the food bowl.

Osgood Magoo & Oodles were all over it.

Toodle-oo would rather taste her own foot.

Osgood & Loocey Loo (front)

Now Toodle-oo thinks its more fun to harass poor Betty Boop than go eat.

"Wake up.  Wake up.  Wake up.  Wake UUUUUUP."

Doodle says, "I'm up!!!!"

Meanwhile...back at the food bowl...Oodles & Loocey Loo

Now Toodles is fussing sister Doodle!

Doodle says, "You think you want a piece of me?  Bring it."

And...more Oodles & Loocey

Toodle-oo finally made her way over to the bowl, along with Osgood & Betty Boop.

Doodle checking out some toys.

Clockwise from the top:  Betty Boop, Oodles, Loocey, Doodle, Toodle-oo, Osgood

"Nom, nom, nom, nom...."

Toodle-oo says, "If all else fails, get INTO the bowl to get a better feeding position..."

Oo's first solid (raw!) meal

Question:  How do you know when it's time to add raw food to the milkbar?

Answer:  When the response is this enthusiastic!

On the menu today was a premade raw puppy food grind from Raw Dog Food & Co.  They dove right in and ate the whole dishful.

Stay tuned for more information on how and why we feed all of our adult whippets and puppies a biologically natural, appropriate raw diet, and for now...enjoy some crazy-cute videos!

Big Pups, Big Pool, Big Developments

Just a quick pop in with an update (more pics and hopefully videos soon).

Pups continue to thrive and grow - still about 10 days ahead of the curve on size!

They graduated to our 'big pool' yesterday with more room to stretch out, the addition of toys, since they're just now beginning to play some... and also starting potty training, with introduction of the puppy litter & litter boxes.

Mostly sleeping and growing today.

Solid food will begin later this week, as well.

Eyes open and full of beans!

Doodle & Toodle-oo were wide awake and ready for action today.

Eyes Opening!

We're at day 13 and the Oo's eyes are just beginning to crack open, right on schedule (days 12 to 16 are about the norm).

They should be fully open in about a day or two.  We'll do no-flash photography for about a week to protect those new peepers, but now the cuteness will REALLY begin.

Pups had their second toenail trim today and did much better - still wiggly, but not quite as much as the first time.

Our resident Maine Coon cat, Uncle Buck, has taken an interest in this litter, just like he did with our last puppies - always present for daily weigh-ins, and was sooo 'helpful' for nail trims today.

Dots is still protective and not allowing the rest of the dogs to interact with the pups, but for some reason is fine with Uncle Buck hanging out with her and the pups.

Speaking of daily weigh-ins - these guys continue to break records!  Such fat little potatoes.

Current weights:

Loocey Loo:  1162 grams

Osgood Magoo:  1209 grams

Toodle-oo:  1183 grams

Oodles of Noodles:  1005 grams

Doodle:  1146 grams

Betty Boop:  1078 grams

No need to adjust your screen - Uncle Buck really IS almost as big as mama Dots!

Oo pups days 9 to 11

The Oo pups are still mostly just sleeping, eating, and GROWING!  Eyes should be popping open soon, and then the real fun will begin.

Current weights are:

Loocey Loo:   980 grams, or 2.16lbs    (birth weight - 392 grams)

Osgood Magoo:  1001 grams, or 2.21lbs   (birth weight - 382 grams)

Toodle-oo:  954 grams, or 2.10lbs (birth weight - 366 grams)

Oodles of Noodles:  850 grams, or 1.87lbs (birth weight - 331 grams)

Doodle: 930 grams, or 2.05lbs (birth weight - 337 grams)

Betty Boop:  890 grams, or 1.96lbs (birth weight - 363 grams)

Just to give a little perspective on how big these pups are - the average age pups reach 1000 grams is about day 18; so some of these guys are about a full week ahead of the curve!

Mama Dots is willing to leave them a bit more often, as she gets over the need to be with them constantly (goodness knows they don't need to eat constantly!)  That allowed for a couple more pics of them all 'puppy piling' together, along with their first visit from a relative - Auntie Lychee, who is Dot's older full sister, got to give them a good sniffing and once over while Dots took a break from them.

Aunt Lychee giving the crew a 'once over.'
